deleting a segment

general question: how do you delete a segment without having to repeat a layer selection?
i.e. you have made a layer from a selection, realized that you selected too many lines, but you already created the layer.

    1. make sure the layer you would like to edit is selected (not all the objects, just the layer in the toolbar)

    2. in the editor toolbar, click 'start editing'

    3. click the cursor symbol to the right of the 'editor' drop down on the editor toolbar

    4. hit 'delete'!

    ^3.5 select the object you would like to delete, obviously...
